All-round guided tour of Chianti
The geographical Chianti today includes a vast hilly area between Siena and Florence. It is really worth visiting the three villages that make up the heart of this area and preserve many of the medieval structures intact: Radda, Gaiole and Castellina. Radda, with its strategic position, was for a long time the capital of the Lega del Chianti; Gaiole, positioned at the foot of the hills in a crucial junction, played the role of market town; finally, in addition to the fortified medieval village, Castellina still preserves the grandiose Etruscan mound of Monte Calvario a few steps from the center, which testifies to the thousand-year-old history of Chianti. The guided tour continues, amidst enchanting panoramas, in the direction of Greve in Chianti, another village which was originally a marketplace. Following the course of the hills together with our expert guide of the territory, you’ll cross oak and holm oak woods alternating with vast vineyards and olive groves, until suddenly clinging to a hill appears a tiny village that looks like a nativity scene or, in the middle of nowhere, a castle or one of the many parish churches with gray and yellow shades of the Alberese area. If you get hungry, black crostini, bruschetta with ‘olio bono’, ribollita, handmade pasta and ‘sliced’ wild boar and cinta senese are served. And of course, the Chianti wine. It can be tasted in the cellars of castles, villas and farms. Or, why not, a nice glass, maybe two, in an unpretentious place sitting in the sun biting into a nice sandwich.
