Guided tour of siena along the via Francigena
The Via Francigena, at first the road of armies, and then the one of pilgrims, trade, cultural exchanges—was a fundamental artery for all of Europe in the Middle Ages. Siena was an important stage, due to its strategic position and efficiency in welcoming travelers. We offer two variants of the guided tour: half or full day. The half-day visit will take you to discover the places of the Via Francigena within the medieval walls that still today, almost entirely, surround the historic center. The guide will tell you the story with a capital S, but also the anecdotes and minor stories of the many “children of the road”, because the journey was not just a transfer from one place to another—it was a journey that changed people’s lives, pilgrims or merchants who were. The entrance to the ancient hospital of Santa Maria della Scala is expected.
The full day tour includes the continuation of the experience with the environmental guide, a quieter path along the Francigena outside the walls, to breathe, see, feel the road and get a little in the guise of new pilgrims.
Admission fee expected: Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala.
Duration: half or full day
