Guided tour of the abbey of san galgano and chiusdino
On the road that leads from Siena to the seaside, in one of the most pleasant places in the Val di Merse, you can admire the remains of the ancient Cistercian Abbey of San Galgano and the Hermitage of Montesiepi. The guide will accompany you on a visit to the entire complex, one of the most evocative in Tuscany, with the open-air Gothic structures of the abbey and the sword in the stone visible inside the hermitage. Galgano Guidotti, born in the 12th century in nearby Chiusdino, chose this as the place of his hermitage and the confessed sword represents his conversion and renunciation of worldliness.
A few decades after his death, the Cistercians chose the plain below the hermitage as the place for the foundation of their imposing abbey, which was later ruined and of which today the skeleton of the church without a roof stands with great charm. The guided tour continues in Chiusdino, where a walk in the charming medieval village—and above all, the entrance to the small, but very interesting, museum of recent construction—is worthwhile.
