Urban trekking: guided tour of Siena and its water
Among the most important construction sites built in the city in medieval times, next to Piazza del Campo and Piazza Duomo, we must remember the water supply system. It is an engineering work of great ambition, built from the beginning of the thirteenth century: 25 kilometers of tunnels under the city soil, the so-called ‘bottini’, which have formed the public aqueduct until the early twentieth century. An equally impressive and clearly visible water system corresponds to this underground Siena which is very difficult to visit: the public springs. Some of those are of a monumentality that goes far beyond their practical function. Through the guided tour of these medieval structures that still survive intact within the walls, the historical and urban events of Siena can be retraced. Accompanied by an expert tourist guide of the area, this urban trekking will be an opportunity to visit classic places, as well as less known and crowded corners.
